The Body is an Incredible Machine: Running My First Trail Race

Whats up guys!!!

Ok so I'm just sitting here reminiscing about this past Saturday where I was apart of an 80km trail relay race with Rivers Edge Ultra, and thinking thinking about how incredibly grateful I am for the body I have and what I can put it through.

So this is a little bit about the race: There are two people that run 19km, two run 12km and two run 9km, each loop is different but is ran twice by the runners in each distance.

I was one of the 19km runners! So going into this I already was stressing because, 1 well its 19km, 2 because it was on trials and 3 because Ive only ran a consecutive 10km once either on a road or treadmill. Of course I had time to prepare more and I was keeping up my cardio pretty decent but then within the last month I had only ran maybe a handful of times.

So as the day kept creeping up I kept getting more and more stressed. Not wanting to hurt myself before or push myself too hard with runs too close to the date, I kind of went in blindfolded and hoping for the best. I made sure to eat and hydrate really well the week leading up and man did it make a difference at least. I kept up my stretching, foam rolling and scrapping and I think that was a saving grace for sure, my body definitely felt better than I had anticipated during the run.

Let me tell you though, the run itself.... way different than I thought it was going to be, in the best way!

I wasn't sure what to expect with the trails themselves and how steep the running along the banks were going to be or really anything, again way different than I thought. The first 3km... I felt I was back hiking in the mountains, thank goodness for all the hikes I did this summer, I know my legs were thanking me for it. I absolutely love hiking and I love running so it was the perfect combo.YES you heard me, I LOVE running and yes I'm a weirdo I know, but I always have. The next 11km were through trees and fields and some other terrain. And then to finish it off we had the last 5km was back into the trees near the river, lots of steep hills, a couple switch backs and some down hills that I definitely thought I was going to go a** over teakettle on, but I didn't fall once surprisingly. I did feel like I did almost roll my ankle about a million times though!

Obviously the aftermath was feeling the lactic acid consume my legs but with some stretches and electrolytes they weren't feeling too bad. I was so thankful for the volunteers and event for the food they supplied during and after the run... I mean bacon white chocolate chip cookies... come one, how could you go wrong!!

!!THE BODY IS SO FLIPPEN INCREDIBLE AND RESILIENT!!

That is what I kept thinking to myself as I was running, my body is so incredible and resilient, like think about what I am putting it through right now! Instead of focusing on how it looked or anything along those lines, like always, ladies I know you hear me on that, I was just solely immersed in the thoughts of what I was accomplishing in that moment.

I am very excited for what next year has to offer and races I plan on attending, hoping to step up my game and try some new things.

Can't wait to share some tips and tricks on training, whether its your first run ever, your first 5km or your next half marathon. We really have to be mindful that we are all unique bio individuals and that what works for one person may not work for you. Listen to your body, it craves nourishment and movement. Lets bring you and your body to harmony in all aspects!

Sending much love, good vibes and health your way,

Jess
